How to Write a Check
A step-by-step guide for filling out every field.
Write the date
Enter today's date in the upper-right corner. This tells the bank when the check was issued and protects you if it's deposited late.
Write who you're paying
On the "Pay to the order of" line, write the recipient's full name or business name. Be precise — errors here can prevent the check from being cashed.
Enter the amount in numbers
In the small dollar box on the right, write the amount as digits including cents (e.g. $130.45). Start as far left as possible to prevent alterations.
Spell out the check amount in words
On the line below the recipient's name, write the check amount in words. Express cents as a fraction over 100 (e.g. 45 cents = 45/100). This line is legally authoritative if numbers and words conflict.
Add a memo (optional)
Note the purpose of the payment — "rent April 2026" or "invoice #42" — for both your records and the recipient's.
Sign the check
Sign your name on the bottom-right line using the signature on file with your bank. A check without a valid signature cannot be processed.
